Patient Responsibilities

Patients, in addition to having rights, also have responsibilities to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of healthcare services. Chief among these responsibilities is complying with the rules established by healthcare institutions to allow services to proceed without disruption.

  • Patients must attend appointments on time and notify the facility in advance if they cannot attend.

  • Patients should respect the time of doctors and healthcare staff and avoid unnecessary or unscheduled interruptions.

  • Patients should not request special privileges or exemptions beyond medical necessity and must not abuse emergency or first aid services.

Patient Companions and Visitors:

  • Must not disrupt hospital hygiene or cleanliness.

  • Should avoid noise and behaviors that disturb order and peace.

  • Cannot bring foods that conflict with the patient’s diet.

  • Must behave respectfully toward healthcare staff according to etiquette.

Interaction with Medical Staff:

  • Patients must not impose psychological, social, or physical pressure that interferes with the independent professional judgment of doctors or staff.

  • Patients cannot demand reports or social security benefits without medical indication or misuse hospital resources.

  • Requests for false or misleading medical documents are not allowed.

  • Providing incorrect or incomplete information to healthcare staff is unacceptable.

  • Patients must provide accurate identity, address, and phone information and respond reasonably to questions.

Treatment Decisions:

  • Patients may refuse a proposed treatment but must clearly inform their physician of their decision and any preferences regarding alternatives or leaving treatment incomplete.

  • Patients who accept treatment must follow it as prescribed.

  • In life-threatening situations, patients cannot refuse to comply with documentation if the hospital or physician requires written acknowledgment of refusal.

  • Patients who do not wish to receive information about their illness must inform their physician in advance and specify who may or may not receive such information.

Cooperation and Responsibility During Care:

  • Once sufficiently informed, patients cannot avoid decision-making about their treatment.

  • Patients must cooperate with physicians and healthcare staff throughout diagnosis and treatment, and make efforts to learn and apply any taught skills.

  • Patients undergoing simultaneous treatments must inform their physicians.

  • Patients must share all reports, imaging, and test results with other healthcare providers and cannot withhold information.

Discharge and Transfers:

  • Patients must arrange for transfers within a reasonable time after being informed of the need for discharge or referral.

  • Patients cannot remove files or other hospital documents without permission.

  • After discharge, patients must follow prescribed home treatments and attend recommended outpatient follow-ups.

Organ and Tissue Donation:

  • Patients who consent to donate organs or tissues after death must document their consent in writing.

  • Patients must also indicate who may make medical decisions if they die or become incapacitated.

  • Patients with infectious diseases (e.g., hepatitis, AIDS) that could endanger healthcare workers must inform the medical staff immediately.

Property and Equipment:

  • Patients must not damage hospital property or equipment.

  • Patients must handle devices and materials carefully to prevent wear or damage.
